Crane Season in Phobjikha

phobjikha

From late October, black-necked cranes arrive in Phobjikha from the Tibetan plateau, circling Gangtey Goenpa three times before landing — or so the villagers say. They stay until February, feeding in the marshes of the valley floor.

The community buried its power lines to protect the birds and celebrates their arrival with a festival each November. Visit with binoculars, keep a respectful distance and spend at least two nights to enjoy the valley properly.
