Etiquette & Culture Tips

Dress codes, temple manners and a few words of Dzongkha to make friends.

Greeting
Kuzuzangpo la
Thank you
Kadrinchhey la
Around chortens
Walk clockwise

Bhutanese people are warm and patient with visitors. A few habits go a long way.

  • Walk clockwise around chortens, temples and prayer wheels.
  • Remove hats and shoes when entering temple shrine rooms.
  • Photography is not allowed inside dzong temples and lhakhangs.
  • Do not point your feet at altars or people, and do not touch religious objects.
  • Smoking in public places is restricted and tobacco is heavily taxed; bring only a small personal allowance and keep the receipt.

A simple kuzuzangpo la (hello) and kadrinchhey la (thank you) will earn you smiles everywhere.
