India and Bhutan share a long friendship, and Indian travellers enjoy easier entry than most visitors.
Documents
Bring a valid passport or voter ID card. Children can travel on a passport or birth certificate with a school ID. An entry permit is issued on arrival at Paro airport or the Phuentsholing gate.
By air or by road?
Direct flights connect Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra and Guwahati with Paro. By road, most travellers drive from Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri to Phuentsholing (about four hours), stay the night and drive to Thimphu the next morning.
Money and food
The Bhutanese ngultrum is pegged to the rupee and Indian rupees are accepted everywhere (avoid ₹500 notes in small shops). Vegetarian food is easy to find, and Jain meals can be arranged with notice.
